Modalities of Treatment for PTSD

The modalities of treatment we use for combat veterans suffering with PTSD are Psychotherapy (“talk” therapy) individual and group, Brainwave Optimization w/RTB and Medications. Everyone is different, so a treatment that works for one person may not work for another. It is important for anyone with PTSD to be treated by a mental health care provider who is experienced with PTSD. Some people with PTSD need to try different treatments to find what works for their symptoms.

Cognitive Behavior Psychotherapy:

Cognitive Restructuring
Cognitive restructuring helps patients identify and challenge their erroneous beliefs and interpretations. It is based on the idea that it is not actual events that cause negative emotional reaction but the interpretation of those events. Therefore, cognitive restructuring seeks to replace worry and anxiety with more positive and productive emotions through the way a patient thinks. People undergoing this therapy are taught to look at their negative beliefs and evaluate the pros and cons of maintaining them. They carefully consider the likelihood of their fears and the cost of those outcomes and look for possible alternative explanations and ways of thinking.

Group Psychotherapy:
Group psychotherapy is likely the most beneficial psychotherapy method for PTSD, especially for military personnel and veterans. A group of peers provides an ideal therapeutic setting because trauma survivors are able to risk sharing traumatic material with the safety, cohesion, and empathy provided by other survivors. It is often much easier to accept confrontation from a fellow sufferer who has impeccable credentials as a trauma survivor than from a professional therapist who never went through those experiences first-hand.

Medications:
A number of medications for PTSD exist. Medications are increasingly being used to treat anxiety disorders. No medications have been specifically designed to treat the symptoms of PTSD; although some medications commonly used to treat anxiety disorders and depression have been found to be effective in helping people with PTSD manage their symptoms.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are generally considered "anti-depressant medications" and include such popular medications as Prozac, Celexa, Paxil, Luvox and Zoloft.

Brainwave Optimization w/RTB:

Your brain is the control center for everything you do. It drives your visual and spatial senses, attention and concentration, memory, language and your ability to reason and be logical. When your brainwaves are out of balance, so is everything else.

Just about every one of us has experienced a trauma or crisis that can throw the brainwaves out of synchronization. This can result in eating and sleep disturbances, addictions, feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger and irritability and physical pain and discomfort.

Brainwave Optimization with Real-Time Balancing (RTB) ™ is an effective and non-invasive method that guides your brain back to its natural, healthy, balanced state.

Every series of sessions begins with a brain map. Sensors are placed in strategic spots on your head. They collect information that enables you to actually see your brain. A brain technologist will work with you to interpret the data and describe your brain balances and imbalances.

We work with you to set goals and then, we work with your brain to restore it to its natural state of balance and harmony. The sessions involve translating your brainwaves into sounds, allowing the brain to “hear” itself and coaxing it into harmony.
